40 inches of what?

A mesh tank's chest number can describe your body, a flat garment, or a doubled garment width. Confuse them and the size chart stops helping.

Learn the three measurements

Before choosing a transparent party tank or reversible athletic mesh top, identify exactly what was measured. Size letters and numbers aren't portable across stores—even when they look identical.

01 / The measurement problem

Start with the measurement, not the size.

Flat tank width measurement locationsA simplified generic sleeveless tank outline. A horizontal arrow spans from side seam to side seam immediately below the arm openings, showing flat pit-to-pit width. The doubled width is an approximate garment chest circumference, not a body chest measurement.Flat widthseam to seamOriginal schematic · not a specific product
A flat width is not a body measurement.

Lay an existing tank flat and measure side-to-side just below the arm openings, if the seller uses that method. Some labels call it pit-to-pit or half chest.

Approximate garment circumference = flat chest width × 2. This is a geometric estimate of a finished garment, not a recommended body circumference. It does not include the necessary ease, stretch, torso shape, armhole placement or any try-on evidence.

A

Body-chest range

A recommendation about the shopper, normally measured around the torso at the seller's specified location. It is not a garment dimension. Ask when the seller doesn't define “chest.”

B

Flat garment width

One edge-to-edge width with the garment laid flat. It can be doubled for an approximate garment circumference if the chart specifies this exact width convention.

C

Garment half-chest

Often the same kind of side-to-side flat width, but verify the seller's illustration and measuring landmark. A 20″ half-chest is not automatically for a 20″ or 40″ body.

Worked example, with its limit: Men of Mayhem's mesh-tank chart lists Small at 51 cm flat chest width. Two widths equal approximately 102 cm (40.2 in) finished garment circumference. VC Ultimate lists a Small standard mesh tank at 20 in half-chest, roughly 40 in finished garment circumference. Similar finished measurements do not establish interchangeable sizing, cut, stretch, opacity or on-body fit—these are different garments and purposes.
02 / Three source-checked examples

Three charts. Three questions.

These were checked against makers' public listings on November 1, 2026. “Add to cart” or “in stock” is only a page observation, not reserved inventory or guaranteed shipping. Recheck your actual variant and destination.

Model / intended contextPublished chest figureWhat it permits—and what it doesn't
Gruff Pup Air Tanks
Single-layer mesh club / casual tank
Small 34–37″; Medium 38–41″; Large 42–45″ under Chest in and “relaxed fit”Chart meaning needs confirmation: the page presents chest ranges but does not expressly document the measuring method or flat garment chest, armhole depth or hem. Do not convert those ranges into finished tank dimensions. The site's “slightly see-through” description is the maker's claim, not our opacity test.
Men of Mayhem Mesh COA
Mesh tank
Chart: Small 51 cm flat width / 75 cm length; Medium 55 cm / 77 cmThe maker explicitly says to measure a tank that already fits, laid flat beneath the armholes. Finished garment width; not a recommended body-chest range. Confirm the exact item, destination and return portal before ordering.
VC Ultimate VCU Mesh Reversible
Athletic reversible tank—method comparison, not sheer clubwear equivalent
Chart: standard Small 20″ half-chest / 29″ HPS lengthMaker explicitly says garment, not body and notes up to ½″ differences for handmade sublimated products. Reversible athletic construction cannot be used to infer mesh transparency or drape in single-layer party tanks.
Do not use the “40-inch shortcut.” A 40″ body, a 40″ finished garment circumference and a 40″ flat width are three different inputs. No universal ease allowance makes them equivalent.
03 / The non-chart unknowns

The chest figure never tells the whole story.

1

Armholes and side exposure

Ask for armhole depth and cut when side-chest or underarm coverage matters. Flat chest width alone doesn't tell you where an arm opening ends on your body. A seller's product photographs aren't dimensions or proof of personal venue suitability.

2

Hem and layer construction

Get an actual hem/body-length definition, and ask whether the exact color has a lining or additional layer. A maker calling mesh “breathable,” “sheer,” “stretchy,” or “reversible” does not measure opacity, stretch recovery or fit. Neither does this guide.

3

Wrong-size and international returns

Gruff Pup's returns page describes 14 days and gift-card-only treatment for clearance returns, while its formal refund policy supplies additional original-condition and timing terms. Check exact SKU and reconcile them before purchasing. Men of Mayhem notes 14-day withdrawal conditions and a separate Global-e portal for international returns. VC Ultimate uses its own product/destination conditions; customized or final-sale terms can differ. No blanket refund promise applies across these stores.

04 / Practical buying decision

The five-minute pre-checkout check.

1

Copy the exact chart label

Record brand, model, color, size, chart wording, units and country. If the source merely says “chest,” mark it unconfirmed until the seller defines body-versus-garment.

2

Measure like the maker says

If it specifies flat pit-to-pit, measure a good existing tank flat. If it specifies body chest, measure your body at its stated point. Do not compare the numbers directly until measurement types match.

3

Check side, bottom and layering

Write down armhole depth, body length and lining/layer facts—or “seller has not specified.” Decide whether an unknown is acceptable for your use.

4

Recheck the actual destination policy

Confirm available variant, customs, return window start, hygiene/condition terms, return shipping and whether clearance receives money back or credit.

5

Stop when a missing fact matters

If the seller cannot identify whether its size number measures body or garment—and a wrong-size item is nonreturnable—ask before ordering, or don't buy yet. A guide cannot replace that missing fact.
