The purchase-risk desk / Swim briefs

Same waist. Different size.

You measure a real 33-inch waist. Three brands put you in three different constructions—and the labels only look interchangeable until you read the charts and the return policies.

This is a practical comparison for picking a brief for a pool party, beach weekend or Pride trip. It's not a wear-test ranking or a prediction of how sheer or supportive any suit becomes in water.

Maker pages and policies reviewed 1 November 2026 (UTC). A tape-measure example, not a personalized fit guarantee. Stock, rules and charts can change before checkout.

01 / Start here

Don't buy your jeans size.

Measure the waist circumference where each maker directs you, while standing naturally. A 33-inch measurement does not mean every brand's “Medium” or “Large” is identical. It also says nothing about pouch room, rise or side cut. If you're between published bands, use the specific cut's guidance rather than automatically translating your size from another maker.

01 · Adjustable front-liner position

Gruff Pup
Woof Prism

L

Listed band: 33–35 inches

Maker describes a movable inner pouch liner: behind it for more front coverage, or in front of it for a more pronounced shape with single-layer mesh in that position. No wet-opacity claim is independently verified.

Product and maker size chart

02 · Sculpted, front-lined pouch

Bear Threads
Classic / Mini

M

Listed band: 31–33 inches

Both cuts share a maker chart and lined sculpted pouch. Classic has more hip coverage; Mini is higher-cut and described as snugger. The maker advises sizing up in Mini if between sizes; the fit may differ even at the same label.

Swim chart and cut guidance

03 · Lined briefs with cut choices

HAC Swim
Basic / Vintage / Flat

L

Listed band: 32–34 inches

Each named brief cut is front-lined. Basic is moderate, Vintage covers more of the hip, and Flat Front is the tightest. HAC recommends considering a size up for more ease, especially with Flat Front. Its adjacent bands overlap at 32 and 34 inches.

Official HAC size and cut guide

What the labels don't tell you: Bear's product/model styling may show a different size preference than its numeric 33-inch chart. That doesn't erase the chart or prove the model size is right for you. Confirm the individual cut with the maker when unsure.

02 / Choose what is actually specified

Lining is a construction detail—not a promise.

A · Adjustable emphasis

Want a choice of front presentation?

Gruff Pup describes two ways to position its inner liner. That makes it the distinct adjustability option on paper. It does not establish how much is visible after a swim, or certify coverage in a specific setting.

B · Listed front lining

Want a maker-specified lined front?

Bear Classic/Mini and HAC Basic/Vintage/Flat all list front linings. Within those groups, side cut and fit differ. A “lined” label is not a universal opacity rating, and no independent wet trial has been performed.

Bear's cut note · HAC's cut note

What if my measured waist isn't exactly 33 inches?

Use each maker's live chart rather than extrapolating from this example. The nearby bands illustrate why a cross-brand size translator can mislead:

  • Gruff Pup Woof Prism: M 30–32, L 33–35, XL 36–38 inches
  • Bear Threads Classic/Mini: S 28–30, M 31–33, L 34–36, XL 37–39 inches
  • HAC Swim: M 30–32, L 32–34, XL 34–36 inches; 32 and 34 appear in two adjacent chart bands

For a boundary measurement or a preference for more room, ask the maker about the exact cut; do not assume the same label will transfer across brands.

03 / The cost of a wrong choice

Read the return rule before the seal is broken.

Swimwear is frequently return-sensitive. These are summaries of written merchant policies, not guarantees that a specific refund or exchange will be approved.

Gruff Pup · conflicting clearance treatment

14-day request window; clarify clearance.

The current policy describes requesting a return within 14 days of purchase for unused, originally packaged items and includes sale items. A separate older returns page describes gift-card treatment for clearance. The two messages aren't interchangeable; confirm the current treatment of your exact item before ordering.

Bear Threads · explicit fee and exclusions

30 days from receipt, with costs.

For eligible unused/unworn merchandise with tags and packaging, the published policy describes a 30-day window from receipt, customer-paid return shipping and a 10% restocking fee. Items marked Final Sale or listed in the Clearance collection are not eligible for return or exchange; check the exact item's sale status. A theoretical size match does not cancel these costs.

HAC Swim · contradictory exchanges

Do not assume a fit exchange is allowed.

The Basic and Flat product listings advertise 30-day unworn exchanges measured from delivery. HAC's general policy instead gives 30 days from purchase and limits exchanges to defective or damaged goods; regular-price refund rules add another restriction. Ask HAC to confirm ordinary wrong-size exchange eligibility in writing before buying.

There is no verified “risk-free” choice here.

HAC's exchange conflict and Gruff Pup's clearance language remain unresolved in source text. A purchase recommendation that silently promises a return would be misleading. If returns are central to your decision, get the seller's current terms for your exact item before payment.

04 / Five-minute preflight

Make the decision you can defend.

First decide whether you prefer a specified lined front or optional liner position. Then pick the particular cut and use that product's chart. Finally read the written return rules for the exact SKU and sale status.

The unresolved variable is how each pair will actually fit your body. A manufacturer chart narrows the starting size; only direct fit feedback or a permitted try-on can settle the rest. We have not tested these items.

Why this guide doesn't rank a “best” brief

The three makers describe different front constructions and sizing systems; we do not have standardized physical trials, durability tests or verified post-swim transparency measurements. A named best overall would turn source specifications into an unsupported performance claim. Your objective and return tolerance define your safer starting point.
