REAL MANLY / FIELD NOTESNO. 031 · POCKET CARD

The good
goodbye.

A small field card for leaving a gathering kindly and clearly. This is a writing aid, not a social rulebook. Bring the important parts, leave the speech.

01 / Settle

Finish your conversation, gather your things and fulfill any agreed responsibilities.

02 / Thank

Find the host when reasonable, and name one authentic thing you appreciated.

03 / Go

State that you're leaving, close the conversation and follow through.

Your departure brief

The person I should thank / any responsibility to hand off
One genuine detail I appreciated
My one-sentence goodbye
A simple example“Thanks for inviting me. I had a good time tonight. I’m heading home—good night.”
If the host is genuinely inaccessible at a huge event, a quiet exit and later thank-you may be appropriate. For an intimate dinner, make a real effort to say goodbye in person.
